For those who don't mind getting sand in their laptops, during last summer there was free internet access on the beach at Foz do Arelho. I imagine something similar will be available this year?
Also, for "Foneros", (members of the worldwide free wireless community) the Fon map at http://maps.fon.com/ shows at least one Fon access point in the area at Antiga Estrada Real, Qta. Da Pateira 5, A da Gorda, Obidos, 2510-011

What a beautiful tree!! But what is it made of? I've been looking at Christmas trees from around the world, and this one is one of the most dramatic!! In addition, this has put Portugal at the top of my list for places to visit..What a beautiful country seeped in so much history!

having now lived here for the last two and a half years having retired from driving hgv's in england for the past 42 years I am confident in my driving and awareness and agree with the other coments as to the driving standards of the portugeues. They like the irish are wounderful people who I love dearly until they get behind the wheel then its the devil take the hindmost.
If you come across one coming the other way on a narrow road they will be in the centre of the road or on your side and will just keep going flat out and just stare blankley at you waiting for you to move out the way, this I think is the main reason for so many accidents, also there blind faith in the fact that if you cannot see round a blind bend its ok to overtake as nothing will be coming the other way. and the fact that they cannot bear to have another vehicle in front of them and will overtake regardless of any accident it might cause.

Dear Ennises, Just wanted to send a belated thank you for all your efforts in helping us sort out our recent holiday at the complex in Praia D'El Rey.
It was superb and we really did have such a relaxing time. It all seems like such a distant memory now and returning to work has been so difficult.
I hope in due course my youngest son (aged 11) will post his personal diary on your blog. It makes for entertaining reading and confirms how differently children think to us!
We did come over to Foz on a couple of occasions but there was no-one at the offices. Then again if you can work from home why not. I do.
Many sincere thanks again.
Regards, Simon.

At the end of last night's Euro 2008 qualifier Filipe Scolari, the Portuguese national team manager, was seen on TV to attempt to land a punch on one of the Serbian team's players. It seems that he was not able to control himself following Portugal's abysmal performance when they failed to hang on to an early lead, their poor play allowing the Serbs to score a crucial equaliser.
It is presumed that Scolari will have to resign or be sacked but, in my opinion, it is more likely that the Portuguese Federation will trot out a load of waffle until the spotlight moves somewhere else.
It's clear to see where the youngsters get their inspiration from.

Hello I use to see them all the time. As i was born in Peniche and i always use to go there often during holidays.
Is the one of the most relaxing places i have been ( i love it in winter time as well)
I am looking for two friends that i met there Marc and Dean 1995/96 (they are not flamingos), they had a house by the beach Bom Sucesso, near the cafe.

Hello,
For your reference we didn't book car hire via your website link. It was
through www.Auto-Europe.co.uk (the company/desk we were instructed to queue
at in Lisbon airport was 'Guerin') The price was very favourable, hence the
queues, which we noticed were similarly long on the way back (perhaps it
being a Saturday had something to do with it? We were also told this was
typical at this time of year). Several desks had long queues. Those that
didn't were inevitably those with considerably higher rates! Hertz didn't
have any queue, Avis had a small queue, and the other good one we think may
have been 'Auto Jardim' (Spanish?).
Anyway, it was just a blip and didn't spoil our holiday. This is just for
your info.
No problem using our comments on the site.
Best wishes

Hello David
Just to say that we had a lovely holiday in Apartment Cristina. Everything
was great and the view was stunning. I think our only hiccup was the long
queue (2 and a half hours!) to pick up our hire car at Lisbon airport...
Many thanks again

I think everyone has to put there thinking caps on ,if there are so many children going missing over Europe, Why has there been arian looking children go missing, in countries that are dark haired, they would be noticed straight away, So they must be taken to a country like Sweden Germany England or the USA or Russia
If they were going for adoption by force and money being exchanged
I do belief this is going on in Europe, and now that the Eastern counries of Europe have the right to roam we will see more of this from the very poor looking people I have seen at the docks in Dover England some people will do anything for money, even tread water from Africa or walk from Poland and Russia for money, so taking someones child and selling them would be easey money
You say Portugal is a poor country it could be that someone needed money there,ie to buy a house ie some EU member wants a house in Portugal, but why didnt they grab the twins instead they would never remember were they came from, but a 4year old would and she would remember her mother and fathers names and never forget them
So it boils down to her being taken for other things , , this man who has been questioned. he could have got her away qickly, he could have taken her to a place that he knew was quiet a farm or another town or village say 4/5 miles he could have done this in half an hour then moved her up country at a later date
I do beleive this child is still in Portugal,, you look in every wine barrell going on every farm 40 or 50 miles radious of were she was taken, you watch him get hot under the collar, and others

More germane to the question of why Portugal has such an abysmal record of economic growth is the continuing apathy on the part of government with regard to the crippling weight of bureaucratic process which is loaded on to private enterprise.
Any involvement with the State by private companies involves a seemingly endless process of obtaining multitudinous bits of paper from different government departments. At no stage does one meet with efficiency or cooperation and it is wholly understandable that entrepreneurs either give up and abandon their schemes or choose to work illegally and add to the already massive black economy.
Until government makes it easy for companies to do business Portugal will remain a third world country tacked on to the edge of Europe.

Having lived in Portugal for the past 18 years I find the proposition that Portugal has the highest percentage of non-smokers amongst the EU states as laughable. There are times when it seems that smoking is compulsory and, in my opinion, Portuguese smokers have no regard for the discomfort of those around them whilst pursuing their anti-social habit.
I, for one, will believe the ban only when it becomes reality and is being enforced and will most definitely not patronise those establishments whose management do not enforce this long-overdue legislation.

Have to mention about this resturant in Peniche. Its called Tasca do Joel and its most unlike the usuall resturants in peniche. We were recommened the place by a local,so, when we went mid week and the resturant was almost full of locals, we thought it must be quiet good. The menu typically has all the fish and bacalou dishes youd expect but also caters for meat lovers. We had wild boar with chestnuts and duck confuit, both meals were extremely tasty servered with simple side dishes of chips and salad. The wine list is extensive with bottles up to €200. The service is very good and the prices are fair. Well worth a visit.
Directions: with the police station on your right drive along rua Sacadura Cabral, follow the road towards the sea before making a right turn into rua do Lapadusso and the resturant is 4 roads up on the left at number 73.
Bon Appetite.

I don't understand the logic of heading to the hills to escape the "heat of the coast". Whilst it can get quite hot here in Foz do Arelho during July and August at least there is a pleasant breeze from the Atlantic whilst if you go 20 kms inland you can easily reach 40-45 degrees with no breeze at all!

The following just goes to show that it is not just the England players and management who cover themselves in spin and embarassment simultaneously.........
Luiz Filipe Scolari, Portugal coach
“This game was not even at half gas. Our big moment was in Belgium and that we won, and because of that I am not going to complain about anything. But clearly, the result does not please me.”
“We should have won. Our finishing was off target again, but now what interests us is the game with Armenia because it is worth three points and they are important for qualification to the European Championships.”
Joao Tomas, Portugal goalscorer
“Now we will rest and prepare ourselves for upcoming matches. How was a draw possible? It was possible because the conditions were difficult. They (Al-Salmiyah) are more used to this weather than we are.”
“We had opportunities to score more goals, but we ended up suffering one from a direct free kick. It was a game where we could have done more.”
Bosingwa, Portugal right-back
“It was not easy to play in this heat. We are not used to playing in these kinds of temperatures. Clearly, all of us wanted to win, but they were much more motivated.”
Deco, Portugal captain
“The result is natural due to the fatigue, the demands from the game against Belgium, the long flight and the intense heat that we have felt, but to lose prestige, never!”
(On wearing the captain’s armband) “I am very proud to have captained the Portugal national team for the first time.”
