RESTAURANTS ON PORTUGAL'S SILVER COAST- TRIED AND TESTED!

rest.jpg
A large part of the fun of being on holiday is trying the different restaurants and there is a great number of them here for you to try. We have tried all the following and have considered them worthy of special mention - this does not mean to say that there are not countless others which may be just as good. If you find one that you really like why not let us know and we can pass on your recommendation to other visitors.

All restaurants levy a small cover charge for which you get bread, olives ,cheese, paté etc. If you want the house wine ask for ‘vinho da casa’. There is always bottled water and, of course there are the international Coca-Colas and Seven-ups. To ask for the bill is.... “a conta se faz favor.”

SABORES D’ITALIA - CALDAS DA RAINHA

In the middle of Caldas a few doors away from the main post office. One of the restaurants locally offering something a little different, in this case Italian food . Great food beautifully presented in comfortable surroundings. Everything here is very good and the price reflects this. Often very busy on Saturday nights so worth calling in to book a table in advance.

ILUSTRA CASA DO RAMIRO - ÓBIDOS
A top-class restaurant in Óbidos with prices reflecting its excellent quality - still amazing value by U.K. standards. A selection of Portuguese and international cuisine served in a spectacular setting and to an impeccable standard. Definitely the place for that special night out or to get rid of the currency you haven’t managed to spend during your stay!

MARRIOTT HOTEL – PRAIA D’EL REY

The hotel offers two excellent restaurants. In the Atlantic Grill you can enjoy a buffet meal and in the Romy Restaurant the cuisine is Mediterranean in style

A COZINHA DAS SENHORAS DA RAINHA – ÓBIDOS
A very tastefully decorated restaurant just inside the walls of this lovely town. The food is imaginative and beautifully served. The desserts are definitely different and are not to be missed. Many good wines. The service can be leisurely but the wait is worth the while. Quite expensive by Portuguese standards.

A LAREIRA - NADADOURO

Situated off the main Foz to Caldas road. Excellent quality and service and a little more expensive than the average. Has an extensive range of Portuguese wines for you to try - ask the head waiter, Sr Manuel, to recommend one. Often quite busy and service can be leisurely. A good place for a steak.

SUPATRA – CALDAS DA RAINHA

Supatra is the name of the lady who runs this Thai restaurant along with her husband Umberto. The food is first-class and can be very spicy so do take care what you are ordering. This restaurant is to be found on the ground floor of an apartment block on the old Lisbon road. If travelling from Praia d’el Rey leave the motorway at junction 17 and follow the signs for Caldas. Turn left at the roundabout and the restaurant is on your right after about half a mile. If travelling from Foz do Arelho head to t he “Queen” roundabout in Caldas and turn right. Soon after the next roundabout Supatra is on your left.

GRELHA NOBRE - NADADOURO
Just before you get to A Lareira on the left hand side of the road once you have turned off the Foz to Caldas road. Specialises in char-grilled meat and fish. There is a good selection of fresh fish on a daily basis. Plenty of staff and can get busy from 9pm onwards - good atmosphere with plenty of noise!

PATIO DOS AMIGOS - NADADOURO
In the village of Nadadouro - opposite the church up a small cul de sac into the large car park. A typical local Portuguese family-run restaurant. Vasco’s twin daughters wait on table while Gloria does the cooking. Saturday night special is often Carne de Porco Alentejana, clams and pork cooked in garlic and coriander and served in a huge earthenware pot - a roll your sleeves up and don’t worry about the mess kind of meal - unforgettable ! Very popular with the ex-pat brigade but still worth a try - or several. Closed Mondays.

CABANA DO PESCADOR - FOZ DO ARELHO
At the end of the promenade and with excellent views over the beach and the sea - a great place to catch the spectacular sunsets we often enjoy. The promenade is a great place for a stroll and a drink before dinner in one of the bars - try the Sétima Vaga for interesting music and good service. The restaurant is usually very busy and it would be a good idea to book or to arrive about 8pm to be sure of getting a table. Plenty of seafood and fresh fish on the menu.

SOLAR DOS AMIGOS - GUISADO
In the village of Guisado about twenty minutes drive into the hills. Food is cooked over a huge open fire in the restaurant. Enormous steaks. Table tops are wine barrel ends and stools are slices of tree-trunk. An experience not to be missed. Portions are very generous and wine from the barrel is first-class. The best ‘seats’ are in the fireplace room so don’t leave it too late to arrive. Closed Wednesdays. As much an experience as a meal out, choose your stool with care !

A CASA - SÃO MARTINHO DO PORTO
On the seafront in São Martinho and a little more up-market than most. Fish and shell-fish a speciality. Food and service excellent and beautiful views over the bay, especially at sunset.

NASCER DO SOL - SÃO MARTINHO DO PORTO
In Salir do Porto, just before São Martinho - coming from Foz do Arelho go down to the roundabout, turn right across the level crossing and it’s 200 meters on your right. A large restaurant usually full of noisy Portuguese. Take a deep breath and go in. There are views of the kitchens and a pleasingly chaotic air when busy with waiters shouting at the kitchen staff and the chef having tantrums and running amok with his cleaver. The best place to try Javalí, wild boar,or the bacalhau da casa, Portugal’s national dish cooked to its best.

ADEGA DO ALBERTINO - IMAGINÁRIO

Situated in the village of Imaginário which is on the Rio Maior road out of Caldas. An extensive range of starters included for the modest service charge, usually including octopus, chicken livers, bacon, cheese and honey and spicy sausage. Portions of main courses are very generous and the staff won’t allow you to order too much so, if you are really hungry - insist! Very popular with the younger set embarking on a night of dining and dancing.

ROYAL MARINHA - THE QUAYSIDE, SAO MARTINHO DO PORTO

This is a very attractive restaurant situated right on the quayside overlooking the fishing boats at Sao Martinho. Run by a husband and wife team - he in the kitchen and she front of house - the Royal Marinha offers dishes which reflect the cuisine of Switzerland from where the owner hails. A great place to eat steak or the king prawn and peppers stew.

Comments

Sabores d'Italia is worth a visit or several. It's a super restaurant, well-run and always serves quality food and fine wines. It costs more than the average restaurant here but is well worth the extra.

Have to mention about this resturant in Peniche. Its called Tasca do Joel and its most unlike the usuall resturants in peniche. We were recommened the place by a local,so, when we went mid week and the resturant was almost full of locals, we thought it must be quiet good. The menu typically has all the fish and bacalou dishes youd expect but also caters for meat lovers. We had wild boar with chestnuts and duck confuit, both meals were extremely tasty servered with simple side dishes of chips and salad. The wine list is extensive with bottles up to €200. The service is very good and the prices are fair. Well worth a visit.
Directions: with the police station on your right drive along rua Sacadura Cabral, follow the road towards the sea before making a right turn into rua do Lapadusso and the resturant is 4 roads up on the left at number 73.
Bon Appetite.
