FLOODS DEVASTATE PORTUGAL

FLOOD DAMAGE.jpg

The unusually strong rainfalls that Portugal has experienced over the past weeks have left the country still counting the cost. Hundreds of people were left temporarily homeless, vehicles and personal goods destroyed, animals killed, and roads flooded.

Eleven of Portugal's 18 districts were placed on yellow and orange alert, the third and second most serious weather warning levels on a scale from green (the lowest) to red (the highest).

According to statistics, the Algarve suffered the brunt of the downpours, closely followed by the Alentejo.

Streets throughout the country’s towns and cities were flooded, leaving traffic in chaos, roads cut off, and homes and shops destroyed.

In the countryside, rivers overflowed, bridges were seriously damaged, electricity poles were torn down by the gale-force winds, and entire herds of livestock were lost in the floods.

It is estimated that on a national level some 185 floods were reported to the emergency services (116 of which occurred in the district of Faro), along with 22 fallen trees and seven landslides.

Numerous families were left homeless, and in some cases the torrential rains left entire villages reduced to debris, and in one case, made into an island.

The Alqueva dam, Portugal’s largest artificial dam, located in the Eastern Algarve neat the Guadiana River, reached 71 per cent of its filling capacity after having risen more then three metres in just two weeks.

It looks like it's going to be one of those winters.

Having been here for 17 years we recognise the signs - and this autumn is a classic - an early onset of rain which does not look like stopping until March!

We will just get our heads down and be grateful that we have four Land Rovers in the company's fleet!

After having 6 glorious days we decided to drive to Lisbon to sightsee around the Belem area last Wednesday 16th. We headed into the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos just as the rain started to fall. After our visit there the rain had increased substantially so instead of heading for the Torre we took refuge in the Cafe Pasties de Belem. Imagine our surprise when after finshing coffee and a pasties (very good) we were trapped inside by a torrent of water sweeping down and up to the top of the wheel arches on the cars outside. Eventually it subsided enough for us to paddle our way to the tram to get back to our car which luckily we had left in a relatively drier part of Lisbon.
I'm sure the sights of Belem are lovely but we will wait for a drier time to go back and explore them.
