Internet in Caldas
Just beyond the top of the fruit market in Caldas da Rainha, opposite the "Cinco Bicas" fountain there is a place where you can connect to the internet free of charge, either by using one of the provided computers, or your own portable if you have a wireless system.
(moving to the "Camara" tourism offices near the post office on 1st August 2006).
The shop front has "Espaco Internet" (internet space) on the windows, and the service is provided by the Camara Municipal of Caldas da Rainha (Municipal Council of Caldas). I'm actually writing this message and posting it to the blog from a desk provided at this "Espaco Internet".
To use the service I simply had to give them my passport for the duration of my using the desk, and let them provide me with the IP numbers to enter into my system.
An excellent and free service which I availed of to work for several hours !
(please see the comments replying to this post for other internet services in the area)

You're right David, that is an excellent service, but it does close at 7pm.
The good news is that the same free service is also available at the Centro de Juventude (Youth Centre) and is open until half past midnight. That is on the Foz road out of Caldas, past the hanging nun roundabout, near the public library and skateboard park.

Thanks for the info Joanne.
I'll be updating my original post today anyway as I see in the "Gazeta das Caldas" that the service is moving to the "Posto de Turismo da Camara" on the 1st August 2006. I assume that this is the tourism office just off the central courthouse square, not far from the post office.
It should also be noted that there is to be a new service at the public library (biblioteca municipal) near the existing service at the "centro da juventude" (youth centre).
Many "freguesias" (local council offices) are also now providing free access to the internet in their own offices. This is the case in the "freguesia" in Vau for example which is in the post office building (correios). The Vau service might be useful for visitors to Praia del Rey or Bom Sucesso.
As is posted elsewhere on the blog, Foz do Arelho are even making the internet available beside the beach.
