Foz do Arelho and Bom Sucesso

This is a better image of the beaches at Foz do Arelho and Bom Sucesso at the opening of the Lagoa do Obidos seen from the Bom Sucesso (south) side. Click on the image to enlarge.

Situated at the mouth of the north side of the lagoon Foz do Arelho has been a much-loved destination for the jaded Lisbon city-dweller. Leading inland from the enormous wave-pounded beach is the tranquil Obidos lagoon which in days gone by stretched as far as the fortified town. Now it is the place of work of many ‘clammers’ who extract the delicious local clams which can be found in the restaurants within the town.

Hello,

question from Holland. We would like to spend holidays over there. We found nice accomodation near the beach of bom sucesso. Is it also possible to cross the beach to Foz do Arelho??
In google earth it appears to be a gap of around 100 meter to cross through the water? Is it deep water and easy to cross?

thanks in advance!

Hello Pascal,

Thanks for a very good question. There are safe bathing beaches on both sides of the lagoon which are supervised during the swimming season, but they are deliberately well away from the lagoon opening.

It would often be very dangerous to attempt to cross the lagoon at the opening. This is because the lagoon is tidal and there can be very strong currents at the opening. The local water authorities spend a lot of time and money on keeping the opening deep to ensure a good flow of water to keep the lagoon clean and fresh for shell-fish and other wildlife.

Kind regards,
